Creating an Army of Laypeople
We saw ourselves as a typical family...Just like yours.
We didn’t see it coming. Neither did his friends, professors, coaches, or even other professionals.
Spencer took his life on June 6, 2022.
Our world changed overnight. As did the plans we all have for our children---watching them grow in their careers, starting families of their own, grandchildren for us, vacations, and so many other things that we tell ourselves we’ll get to experience through their eyes ‘someday.’
Our daughter, Sophia, said something that no family should have to realize. When she was preparing for her speech addressing a crowd at a suicide awareness walk at the University of Georgia, Sophia said, “I realize now that I am older than my older brother.”
Whether it was a friend, family member, coworker, neighbor, or a celebrity whose work you admired, at some point in your life, you have been affected by suicide. More young men die by suicide, but more young women attempt it. It remains the 3rd most common way to die for those 15-29 years old.
The purpose of the Spencer Bradley Foundation for Mental Health is to educate teachers, coaches, youth pastors, friends, neighbors, parents, grandparents,
and especially the peers of our youth and young adults, to recognize the signs that are common in someone who may be considering taking their own life.
The Foundation currently provides trainings locally and across the state of Georgia. We support training programs that reach over 384,000 students in every public college and university in Georgia. We currently are in discussions about reaching another 150,000 students enrolled in the trade schools throughout the state.
Your support makes this work possible. Our goal is to create an army of people, just like you, who can ask the important questions and recognize the struggles that exist in our friends and children.
With enough of us knowing what to look for, we can prevent the loss of another great kid.
